It’s one thing to travel around America, it is quite another to live there. Prices in the United States are much higher than the average European, but the country is not inferior in quality and variety of services.
It will take at least four years to study here. If you plan to do research in local research centers and study in graduate school, then you will have to stay for a long time.
In any case, it is important to properly manage your finances. Such a plan includes the cost of language courses, direct payment of study abroad, preparation for the move and the budget for living abroad. You can consult overseas education consultants to do this work easily.
The expenses are still waiting “on the shore”
Studying in the United States will be the most expensive. Depending on the chosen university and the direction of study, the price of education ranges from 15,000 to 40,000 dollars per year.
In addition, you have to pay for the opportunity to pass the mandatory entrance tests:
The SAT exam is required for undergraduate studies. With it, you can invest in $86 ($51 – the cost of the test, $35 – the international fee).
For MBA in USA, profile exams GRE or GMAT are required. For Ukrainians, GRE costs $185, GMAT- $250.
Additional expenses will be spent on checking the level of English proficiency. The TOEFL language test costs about $180, and the price for IELTS ranges from $130 to $140.
In a separate column in the list of expenses, write down the consular fee for foreign students from Ukraine – about $200. Payment must be made a few days before the interview at the embassy.
Travel and insurance
Then- a flight to America. A one-way trip will cost $500-700. To save money, it is better to buy an air ticket a couple of months before the expected start of classes at the university.
American higher education institutions require everyone, without exception, to issue insurance policies for medical services. Some universities offer student discount programs. The insurance policy must be paid monthly. For a year, its cost can reach $2,000. Tickets.
Basic expenses in the USA: housing, food, transportation
Some students will agree to live on the campus next to the academic buildings, because renting separate apartments is far from affordable for everyone. A month of living in a rented apartment is $600-2000 plus utilities- about $200.
Again, the price is affected by the area of residence and the available infrastructure. Sometimes students rent housing almost unfurnished in order to bring down the price.
If you buy groceries in the store and cook yourself, you will get no more than $ 250 a month for a standard menu: a hot dish, side dishes, some meat or fish, vegetables and fruits. Public transport in the United States is not cheap: the metro and bus can cost about $ 175 a month.
Of course, these calculations are approximate. Your habits will affect the further budget. Answer honestly: how willing are you to deny yourself anything?
The state and district in which your university is located also forms the aggregate price tag for everyday expenses. Supermarkets, clothing and household chemicals stores, cafes and beauty salons in Arizona and Texas are much cheaper than in California and Washington.
